  • Totara extract - Totara has been used extensively in Maori Rongoa (medicine) to fight infection and heal wounds.  It possesses antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and astringent properties.  The constituent Totarol is responsible for its antioxidant properties and has been shown to be more effective than Vitamin E in protecting the skin from free radical damage, associated with ageing.  All Totara extracts in New Zealand are produced from recycled timber and bark, so no trees are felled in the production of this extract.

Manuka essential oil - Manuka has been shown to contain constituents with powerful antimicrobial properties.  We use only Manuka essential oil produced from the East Coast of New Zealand, which has the highest levels of these actives.  Manuka possesses anti-inflammatory properties and for this reason along with its extraordinarily gentle nature makes it the perfect addition to our Native Cleansing Cream.

German chamomile extract - Chamomile flowers have been used for centuries both as a calming, soothing tea and topically to help repair wounds.  From the flowers comes the essential oil, rich in chamazulene, giving a deep blue colour.  Research has shown Chamazulene to have powerful anti-inflammatory properties.  For this reason it is perfect for inclusion in skincare, having a calming, soothing effect o the skin.  German chamomile works as a local vasoconstrictor so will lessen redness in the skin due to enlarged capillaries. It is a very precious oil taking many kilos of flowers to obtain only a small amount of essential oil through steam distillation.  On an energetic level German Chamomile is said to encourage communication understanding and empathy, calming and soothing the soul, increasing ones’ patience.

Evening Primrose oil - The healing power of Evening Primrose was first recognised by Native Americans who used a concoction of the seedpods to heal wounds.  Evening Primrose is extremely rich in fatty acids with high levels of gamma linolenic acid (GLA) which has been shown to be an effective treatment for many skin conditions, through it’s ability to inhibit the inflammatory process.  These naturally occurring fatty acids are very similar in structure to the fatty layer that covers every cell – thus oils rich in fatty acids improve cell health and function and in the skin improve texture and elasticity. The oil is very fine and is readily absorbed through the skin, making it ideal for skincare use.

Rosehip oil - Rosehip oil is extremely rich in antioxidants.  It has high levels of essential fatty acids, which greatly benefit the skin through improved moisture retention, elasticity, and softness. It also contains beta-carotene, which is a key nutrient for maintaining healthy skin and assisting skin cell renewal and repair. Beta-carotene also helps to repair and protect the skin from various forms of sun damage. Rosehip is a rich source of Vitamin A (retinol) and Vitamin C.  Vitamin A is required for healthy skin cell regeneration and Vitamin C is necessary for the production of collagen an integral component of skin tissue, giving it strength and flexibility.  As we age our natural production of collagen diminishes. Rosehip oil has a similar pH balance to that of the oil produced by human sebaceous glands in the skin.  It is readily absorbed assisting in improved hydration and texture and is excellent for use on minor scarring.

Camelia oil - The "beauty secret" of the geishas of Japan, Camellia has been recognised for centuries in Eastern Asia for its highly regenerative and restorative effects on the skin. Camellia oil is known for its excellent moisture-retaining ability, which makes it an effective moisturising and replenishing oil. It is suitable for sensitive and allergy-prone skin, absorbs quickly and easily, and leaves the skin looking and feeling smooth and supple. Camellia also possesses antioxidant, disinfectant, and germicidal properties.  Camellia is extremely rich in mono-saturated fatty acids, containing more than 80% oleic acid. It is also rich in vitamins A, B and E, various minerals, and squalene, which is an important component of the skin's natural emollient system. Deficient levels of squalene can result in dry, sagging, and wrinkly skin.

    Lavender hydrosol and essential oil

Lavender has been used for centuries across many cultures for its soothing, calming and healing properties.  It is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antibacterial and is known for its skin cell regenerative (cicatrisant) properties.  Lavenders properties promote balance enhancing it’s suitability for all skin types.  The aroma of Lavender is calming and soothing to the mind, relieves stress and anxiety opening the door to new horizons.

Roman chamomile essential oil - This is one of the most gentle of all essential oils.  The essential oil of Roman chamomile has both sedative and anti-inflammatory properties.  Its aroma is both calming and soothing to the nerves and particularly beneficial in relieving stress and anxiety.  In skincare it is particularly useful for calming any irritation in sensitive skin.  Energetically Roman chamomile is harmonising, peaceful and soothing to the spirit.
